Prepping for the Eclipse

In less than a week we will see a total eclipse of the sun here in Vermont, Now is the time for preparations to be finalized.

Questions to consider:

Are you in the path of totality? You have probably heard it over and over. A partial eclipse is nothing like a full eclipse. If at all possible go for the totality. It is the 2-3 minutes when the moon totally blocks the sun that is miraculous. The rest of the eclipse is also magnificent, but it’s not the same. It truly isn’t.

Have you left enough time to get to your site? Be prepared for crowds and traffic.

Are you prepared for the weather? Here in Vermont it is forecasted to be in the lower 50’s. The entire eclipse is several hours, so wear appropriate clothing and bring food / water as you want. A chair is also nice, especially since we recently got up to a foot of snow so the ground will probably be wet and / or muddy.

Do you have your filters? Use filters for your eyes as well as all cameras and other equipment. You can fry your eyes and your equipment if you don’t have appropriate filters. Use them. You can remove the filters for the few moments of totality when the sun is completely blocked, but make sure to put them back on when the sun begins to peak out from behind the moon again.

Finally, and most important – use all your weather influence to make sure the day is clear and sunny.

Thanks for looking,

Stay well, be curious, learn things.
